Disaster Preparedness Radio Communications Fund
Time and again we have seen disasters test and break communications systems. As the frequency of these disasters increase, our communities move closer toward a socially unstable and ecologically uncertain future. As frontline workers, we need to be able to rely on our own autonomous communications systems and networks to weather the storm.
Community Radio Communications Fund
Signals Rising provides radio communication hardware and related educational resources to community organizations doing important frontline work in the struggle for economic, racial, and environmental justice. We work with these groups to meet their immediate and future communications needs.
Practical skills development is needed to bring individuals up-to-speed to be able to utilize and maintain their radio communication systems. Signals Rising sponsors classes and certifications to advance your individual capabilities, as well as obtain radio hardware.
Signals Rising sponsors research, investigations, and testing, for radio-related projects. We also invest financial support toward the development of open-source radio tools and projects that advance autonomous communications systems.
What is Mutual Aid?
Mutual aid is a form of community cooperation where groups of people in a particular area, or from a particular community join together to support one another, meeting vital community needs without the help of official bodies. Oftentimes arising due to neglect in government provision for certain classes of people, mutual aid is a tool for collective social and economic cooperation. Mutual aid, in simpler words, is cooperation for the common good. (source: mutualaid.coop)
Why Mutual Aid Focused on Radio Communication?
Much of modern human civilization is made possible through the use of radio communication technology, often revolving around accessibility to the internet and cell phone networks. The backbone of our current communications systems are primarily dependent on corporate and government infrastructure, which can break down during disasters. Signals Rising is building capacity for communities and individuals to access decentralized radio networks that can communicate more autonomously and securely. Modern technological advancements have allowed such systems to be developed and maintained and we provide resources for people to access them.
